Intorno a Diego Birelli:
Il lavoro del graphic designer attraverso
le dinamiche professionali
tra gli anni sessanta e ottanta in Italia

+

Info:

The profile of Diego Birelli (Asti 1934 – Venezia 2011) as a graphic designer may be analysed by mapping the relationships he developed throughout his professional career. Between the sixties and the eighties, Birelli attended the Corso superiore di disegno industriale in Venice; as a militant graphic designer he took part in the political struggles led by parliamentary and extra-parliamentary left-wing parties; he interpreted the graphics of social engagement for the Venetian community and was a key figure in the metamorphosis of Italian publishing as art director for Marsilio, Electa, Alfieri and the Italian Touring Club. Connecting the primary sources with the existing historiography of graphic design, this research study intends to describe the figure of the designer within the wider dynamics of design work and the design process.

Nel cuore della democrazia 2013 / 2014

+

Info:

‘Nel cuore della democrazia’ is an educational project that aims to introduce the concept of democracy to children and high school students, and show them how the Region administrative organs work, using a simple and clear language.
Stencils and drawing rulers have been instruments for designing the display letters used in the publication: taking advantage of the limits of these objects, and using them in a non-rigorous way, we were able to create an alphabet of various and simple shapes. Technical symbols from differents disciplines – electronics, architecture, interior design, hydraulics, etc. – are reduced to simple elements, and become new shapes and glyphs.

Info:

The Exhibition Design research group, formed in the late Sixties and consisting of several protagonists of Italian graphic design such as Giulio Confalonieri, Silvio Coppola, Franco Grignani, Bruno Munari and Pino Tovaglia, is an extremely interesting experience which so far has been investigated only partially, on the sidelines of the components’ individual biographies. The analysis of this collective experience provides an opportunity to reflect on the interpenetration between graphic and industrial design in a defining moment for the history of Italian design, on the role of research and experimentation in the dialogue with both the industrial companies and the community, on the responsibility of the designer toward the end user, on the use of the exhibition space as a place for meeting and cultural dissemination.

Four exercises are carried out with the help of alarms present on common phones. Alarms set at the same time for all phones ring at different times with different tones, volumes, frequencies and movements. Autobiografia del territorio

+

Info:

Iconographic research and project proposal for the identity of Pesaro-Urbino district. A huge group of signs, icons, symbols, typography, images, logos collected during the research expressed by itself the identity of that district spontaneously, almost unconsciously. So it’s inevitable to ask to yourself, if it’s useful and necessary to design another brand-new logo.
An alphabet of signs was born from there, composed of excellent companies logos, artisanal ornamental motifs, sport teams emblems, cultural realities trademarks, territorial certification symbols, recurring aesthetic elements in the landscape, peculiar architectures and public signs, etc. In this way, the image of the territory is narrated dynamically through symbolic stimula, assimilating and systematizing them into ever-changing self-portraits of the territory.
